Twitter catches Sen. McCaskill in lie about meetings with Russian ambassador

Posted on March 02 2017

Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) tweeted her condemnation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions earlier today, stating “I’ve been on the Armed Services Committee for 10 years. No call or meeting with Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of the Foreign Res Com."

Twitter users responded quickly with McCaskill's own past tweets highlighting her meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in 2013 and 2015.

McCaskill's misleading statement comes on the heels of questions about Attorney General Jeff Sessions meeting with the Russian Ambassador, despite his testimony to the contrary during his confirmation hearing. Democrats have alleged that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians to influence the presidential election of 2016.

Though no evidence linking Trump or his campaign with Russian agents has appeared, Democrats have focused on the issue in their efforts to resist and hinder the Trump administration, including efforts to block Trump's appointments of key cabinet officers and Supreme Court justices.

McCaskill has updated her statement since her own tweets disproved her initial comment. The Senator now says she never met "one-on-one" with the Russian ambassador, but Jeff Sessions did.
