Everyone gets a trophy! New DNC Chair appoints rival Ellison as deputy

The Democratic Party chose Tom Perez, former Secretary of Labor under President Obama, as its new Chairman. Perez, who was favored by the party establishment, won election against insurgent rival Rep. Keith Ellison of Michigan.

Ellison was the top pick among the left wing of the party, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, and was a controversial candidate due to allegations of anti-semitism and radical Islamic leanings against him.

Chairman Perez moved to suspend the normal rules of the DNC election and appoint Keith Ellison as his Deputy Chairman.

Ellison is the first Muslim to serve in the United States Congress.
